The first luxury Italian brand to arrive in the Maldives, The Baglioni is less brash than many of if its five-star counterparts. It has a beautiful location in the Dhaalu Atoll, soothing low-key design, family-friendly facilities and grown-up drinking and dining options.

The Baglioni is located in the bewitching Dhaalu Atoll, a 45-minute seaplane journey south of the capital Malé. Shaped like a leaf, the island is wrapped in a thick band of cottony white sands and impossibly blue waters, which makes up for a rather bare house reef. There are impressive corals and plenty of colourful reef fish just a short boat ride away though, and manta rays make an appearance in the area during February and March.

There are 46 over-water villas and 50 beach villas, which have been squeezed onto an island which can be circumnavigated on foot in 15-minutes, meaning privacy is at a premium. The rustic, thatch-roofed exteriors fit in well with the tropical island setting. Large bathrooms are positioned at the rear of the villas, Maldivian style, and have twin sinks, monsoon showers and stand-alone bathtubs.
